Claire Halstead – On May 1, 2024, my husband Kyle and I welcomed our daughter, Marigold Edith Halstead-Hartlen. She was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening condition and spent six weeks in intensive care. Thanks to the extraordinary care of the NICU team – and a bit of a miracle – Marigold survived and is now thriving. In the spirit of gratitude and giving back, we established the Marigold Edith Halstead-Hartlen NICU Endowment Fund at the IWK Hospital to support initiatives focused on safety, resilience, empowerment, staff mental health, family-centered care, and trauma-informed practices. To celebrate her first birthday, we launched a fundraiser called Marigolds in Bloom, selling over 1,500 marigold flowers and raising more than $2,400 for the NICU. We delivered cake and chocolates to the NICU team and visited Marigold’s nurses – a joyful and emotional full-circle moment. Our goal is to raise $5,000 next year! Why marigolds? These flowers symbolize resilience, hope, and warmth – thriving even in tough conditions, just like our little girl.
